Overview of CITA

CITA is a collaboration between academics and industry partners interested in large system development and operation. Very large computer-based information systems are common in public sector organizations such as Health and Defense and in multinational corporations and may use internet technologies to bridge a large number of systems. The operation of such systems brings issues that may not be significant in smaller systems. Large numbers of users with diverse requirements, complex technical and support networks, and lack of shared terminology are just some of the factors, which almost always involve both human and technological dimensions. These factors impact individual privacy, security, interoperation, the diffusion of knowledge, and effective use of resources. The hope in the end is to be able to apply technology to overcome barriers of time and distance between people. This challenges software engineering and informatics to discover new approaches to designing, implementing and using systems.

Aims of CITA

  • Research into large information and software systems that solve real world problems.

DCITA conducts research of international standing in IT applications that will provide particular value to the Hunter and Central Coast regions and to its industry stakeholders. Its initial work centers on Health and manufacturing sector applications and on software engineering practices such as collaborative development. The research culture connects researchers from a range of academic disciplines and diverse universities, and engages industry, the public sector and community organizations.

  • Training and dissemination of innovative practices in applied IT.

DCITA recognizes the importance of industry interaction for students and for academics, and the benefit that research and professional training brings to industry. With the advantage of its industry collaborators, it facilitates and supports:

    • Quality industry work experiences for well motivated students, especially those in the industry-focused Bachelor of Information Technology and the Bachelor of Engineering (Software).

    • Collaborative R&D projects with industry, which may involve research students and high achieving professional masters students completing a significant project.

    • Consultancies, especially in the area of Health Informatics and Software Engineering.

    • Seminars, workshops, community education initiatives and other learning opportunities for industry, academics and students.
